Meet Truffel 🩵
Estimated date of birth: March 12, 2026
A sensitive little soul with a big heart, who found his way back home.
His beginnings
Truffel was rescued by tourists in Curaçao. The local rescue centre was already full, so I took him in as a foster puppy.
From the beginning, Truffel was a sensitive and insecure little boy. New situations and unfamiliar people could be overwhelming for him, and he needed time, patience and a safe environment to feel comfortable.
But with the dogs around him and people he learned to trust, a much sweeter side began to emerge. Truffel loves cuddles, and when he feels safe with someone, he wants to be close to them. One of his favourite things is snuggling up in bed, falling asleep in your arms and waking up right beside you. And if you're relaxing in the hammock, he'll happily join you for some cosy cuddle time.
One thing he absolutely loves is other dogs! He enjoys their company and has since formed a particularly lovely bond with both Jacki and Tara.
His first adoption
I would have loved to keep Truffel myself, but I already had many dogs to care for. When the opportunity for adoption came along, the potential adopters seemed like a wonderful match on paper. They understood that Truffel needed a quiet life where he wouldn't be pressured into anything and could discover the world at his own pace.
Unfortunately, after just six days, it became clear that the situation wasn't right for him. He wasn't given the time and space he needed, and he had to leave his adoptive home.
I won't go into all the details, but Truffel needed a chance to feel safe again.
Two weeks to decompress
After leaving his adoptive home, Truffel spent two weeks with an emergency foster family. There, he was able to rest, settle down and recover from the experience.
This time also helped us understand him better. Truffel tends to form a strong bond with one or two trusted people. They become his safe little bubble, and once he feels secure, you see a completely different dog.
With his trusted people, he is playful, happy, affectionate and full of cuddles. Around unfamiliar people, he can be much more reserved. He needs the freedom to approach people in his own time and build trust without pressure.
The journey back to Curaçao
After two weeks in emergency foster care, Truffel made the long journey back to Curaçao. I was worried that everything he had experienced, combined with such a big journey, might leave him traumatised.
But Truffel surprised me.
He walked through the airport as if it were just another ordinary day. Then, once we were through the gates and he heard the familiar sound of dogs barking, something magical happened.
There he was again: a big smile, a happy and playful little boy, ready for cuddles and completely himself.
He was home.
His forever home
Truffel will stay with me at Demi&RescueFriends. He doesn't have to move again or start over somewhere new. He can grow up surrounded by familiar dogs, people he trusts and the freedom to live life at his own pace.
He doesn't need to become a different dog to fit into the world. He simply needs to feel safe enough to show everyone the wonderful little character he already is.
And here, he can spend his days playing with his dog friends, cuddling in bed, snoozing in the hammock and knowing that he is right where he belongs.
No more goodbyes. Truffel is home for good. 🩵
